Working In Digital Media Week 1

Howdy all! Gary Cunningham here. Back again in ITB. Just started Semester 2 & already it’s shaping up to be deadly.  So we had our first Lecture in “Working In Digital Media” with Clodagh & one of the things we’ve got to do is keep a weekly blog about what we have being doing in this module. So in our first Lecture Clodagh gave us the low down on what we’ll be doing this semester in “Working in Digital Media”. She told us of some of the Guest Speakers that are going to be coming in to us which include, Geraldine Grey – Learning Styles, David Joyce – Logo Design, Maria Brown – Interview techniques, Edward Melvin – ICANN, & Ruth McPartlin – Fluid Rock. We will be spilt into groups for when these Guest Speakers come in & it will be the job of that group to video their talk with us.  We then were told of our up coming assignments. The first of these is where we have to create our C.V with a hint of a Design element.   CV_with_Design.(example)

Then we have to create a Book Cover which should “express who you are, in a creative manner. It should illustrate your hobbies and interests through imagery”.

Above is an example of one done last year by a student in ITB.

We will the be asked to present our our C.V & Book Cover to the class in a five minute presentation using powerpoint.

Next on the list is we will be asked to create a Digital Leaflet. In this we will be asked to include the following information: “Description(s) of roles within the industry e.g. Web Designer, Graphic Designer, Sound Engineer etc..)
Listings of real job adverts that are currently available. A summary about awards in the digital media industry such as the Spider awards, Company profiles of key players within the industry”. We must also invent a name fot the leaflet & pretend that it’s published on a monthly basis.

Above is an example of a page from a Digital Leaflet.

Next up is we will have to do Interviews which we will be asked to dress appropriately & show our skills in answering the questions set out to us & also did we research the job properly. Finally we have to do a Photo Story in which we will be graded on our storyboard & then our footage. Clodagh gave us some examples to give us an idea which i have put up for you to have a look at, at the end of this entry.

Also we will be going on a field trip to the Digital Hub which i can’t wait for. We then had our practical in “Working In Digital Media” with Ronan Mullen. This was our first time to meet Ronan & he came across very well. He is going to be on hand to assist us with our assignments & also to give us some tipps & guidance as we go through the semester. We then had our first lab with Clodagh in “Working In Digital Media” which was deadly. Clodagh is going to be showing us how to use the Adobe Software “Illustrator” which i can’t wait to get into. Clodagh gave us a quick intro & got us to draw some vector shapes just to get the hang of it.  So i think you’ll agree that although we’re going to be busy we’re going to learn a lot & have some fun in the process. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into this module along with the others that we have this semester. So there ya go. My first “Working In Digital Media” blog. I’ll be back next week for that week’s installment hope to see ya then. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Take care.

Visual Language Week 13 Typography Assignment

Hi again. Ok so our assignment in Typography was two fold. First we had to do a sketch of our face. I’ve put up that sketch for you to have a good laugh at!!! I can’t draw to save my life!! Then we had to represent our face using typography. I took a shot of my face then went into Photoshop & turned it into a black & white image with highlights & placed some random words over it. The words are just me typing anything onto the screen. I’ve also put up the original photo & the result after i photoshoped it. I hope you like them. Again i really enjoyed doing this assignment although i do dread the idea of drawing!! But i gave it my best shot & actually, if anything, it’s funny!! So i hope you enjoy looking at them as much as i enjoyed doing them. now comes the sad part………………… This marks the end of Visual Language!! I have to say i’m really going to miss this module. It has been such an enjoyable subject with the best two lecturers EVER. I was a bit nervous about it at the start, when we did our 60 images, but we all got so much encouragement form both Niamh & Margret & that really really helped. My favorite assignment was the Semiotics one, although, they were all great assignments. So a HUGE thank you first of all to all the other guys & gals in digital media year one for all there help, advice, & general deadlyness!!! Thanks for everything guys. Also a MASSIVE, HUGE , THANK YOU to Niamh & Margret for…………….well EVERYTHING!! Ye are both LEGENDS!! So as James Douglas Morrison once sang “This is the end beautiful friend”. But i will be back (i hope haha) next symester and i’m sure this blog will be used for another module. i’m going to keep it going anyways! So thanks for putting up with my “stuff” for the last 13 weeks. I have enjoyed it so much so i hope you did too. Take care.

Visual Language Week 12

Hello again. this week we had no lecture in Visual Language & in our lab Margret gave us the time to finish our typography assignment. As always Margret was on hand to help us with anything we needed. I’m going to publish my finished work now. It’s my next entry. I hope you like it. Take care.

Visual Language Week 11

Hi everyone. Ok so AGAIN i wasn’t in for Visual Language this week but my Mam was in hospital & i was there with her. But AGAIN Niamh & Margret were very understanding towards me. I learned from the guys that our Lecture  was on Typography & which is another form of Visual Language. My tattoo is a good example so i’ve included a picture. So we have been giving an assignment which is to (a) make a quick sketch of our face & (b) make a typography out of that image. We are aloud to use photoshop so i’m gonna go with that. Sorry i’m no my usual self at the mo just a lot going on but i’ll be back to my best (or worse haha) next week. Take care talk to ya then.

Visual Language Week 10

Hi everyone. This week was kinda different for me & i’ll explain why. Firstly i’d really really like to thank Niamh & Margret for excusing me from our Lecture & Lab. It was very much so appreciated. The reason they let me off is because myself & a fellow student & friend (Paul Murray), at the start of the collage year, decided to start up a photography club/society (photosoc). We are currently the biggest club/society in ITB & we even grabed the attention of the ITB marketing board who were very impressed with us. Anyway enough of that on Friday we held our first Exhibition of photos taken by our (42) members. We had 160 photos on display, which were put on boards, that we rented for the day. There were two categories ‘RAW PHOTOS” (non-edited)  & “PHOTOSHOP” (edited). There was prizes for 1st,2nd & 3rd in both categories. The winners were to be decided by the students & staff that came to have a look as they were asked to vote for their favorite in both categories. We had over 400 staff & students come to look & vote which is amazing (but  hard work on us poor committee members!!) Niamh & Margret dropped by to show their support which was fantastic! So not only did they excuse me but they came & showed support to our exhibition. I came Third in the raw category, which i was very surprised at but chuffed all the same.  I’ve put up that entry (Guitar way to Heaven (very epic haha))  plus one of my photoshop (Dad & Son Stand Proud) ones. The guys in my photoshop one are my Brother (&Best Friend) Noel & His Son (my nephew) Sean. If you would like to see all the entries & i highly recommend that you do we have a facebook club page. Heres the link http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/ITB-Photosoc/225824752288

If that doesn’t work then just search for ITB photo club in facebook. Ok so i know i’m bending the rules a little as this blog is not about Visual Language but i’d rather tell you all why i wasn’t in that day rather than write nothing at all!!Plus i’m so proud of everyone of our members & committee for helping put on such an amazing exhibition. So forgive me for my rule bend but i do hope you enjoyed this entry. Back to normal next week. We’re presenting our Semiotics to our classmates which will be great. HUGE thank you to the very very very cool Niamh & Margret AGAIN for letting me away on Friday. Two LEGENDS!! Thanks for taking the time to read this hope to see ya all back next week. Take Care.

Semiotics Assignment

Hey all! So we had an assignment to do in Visual Language. It involved getting one photo of any celebrity & portraying them in three different ways. I chose George Bush & the three ways i tried to portray him are: “evil”, “popular” & “wealthy”. Here’s the first image of good old George “evil”:

My thinking here was to make him look like a sort of vampire. I made his ears bigger, altered his eyebrows, gave him fangs & had blood drip down from them. I also deadened the color around his eyes&made his eyes “glow” to give that evil vampire look. I then placed him in front of a fire image to represent “the fires of hell!!” I really like this image & enjoyed creating it. I used photoshop in the creation of this & all my images. Next is “popular”:

This time i wanted to portray him as a different kind of popular so he’s “popular for being a wanted man!” I created the wild west wanted poster (along with scratches) in photoshop which took some time. I then placed my stock photo of George in & messed around with the colours until i felt that he blended in with the old look of the poster. I then got a stock picture of a wall & placed the wanted poster on it. Again i really enjoyed creating this image. Last but not least is my personal favorite “wealthy”:

This time i created the “Time” magazine from scratch in photoshop. I then added in good old George. I then added the text myself. I purposely miss-spelled “cents” & “november” as i feel this is in going with the stupid mistakes that good old George has been known to do throughout his time as American President. Then i got a stock photo of a $100 dollor bill & copied it twice & had them float around him. This is my favorite image as it’s a bit of fun & tongue in cheek. All work was done in photoshop & all images were downloaded from google images. So there you go. That was my semiotics assignment. I really enjoyed this assignment & hope you enjoy looking at the images. Also i’d just like to add that all the first year Creative Digital Media students work for this assignment is superb. I highly recommend you view them too. You can access them from the tags here on my page. Thanks for taking the time to read & view this blog. I’ll be back on Friday with my weekly update. Take care.

Visual Language Week 9

Howdy folks. Another busy week in ITB & another great visual Language Lecture & Lab. In our Lecture we firstly had a quick re-cap on last weeks Lecture & Niamh also gave us a reminder of what’s involved in our “Semiotics Assignment”. We then talked about “Design principles” which i found very interesting.  There were five design principles we looked at : Balance, Contrast, Movement, Emphasis, Unity. These design principles & how you apply them  assist you in determining how good you are at creating a artwork/design/composition. Firstly we looked at Balance. Visual balance refers to the degree of equilibrium in a composition. There are two ways to express visual balance: Symmetrical balance, &, Asymmetrical balance (Asymmetry). Symmetrical balance is mirror image balance so if you draw a line through the center of a page the the elements on one side are mirrored on the other side. This is easily achieved by placing elements fairly evenly in your design. Asymmetrical balance have elements that don’t mirror each other across the centerline. These are harder to design but can be very appealing to the viewer. You could place several small items on one side of your layout & one large item on the other to achieve this. Niamh then pointed out that once you know the main rules of balance then you can “brake” these rules with a lack of balance to convey motion or action. We then looked at Contrast which can simply mean difference. You can have contrast in composition, (placing opposing elements in relation to each other) size, (using a dominant headline on a bold image) shape, (using contrasting shapes to cause tension) & color (using small area’s of vibrant color to balance large areas of more neutral color). Niamh then spoke about Movement. Movement is the path our eyes follow when we look at an image/poster/work of art. It can be achieved by using Line, (diagonal lines give the sense of movement) Repetition, (elements that have something in common are repeated regularly or irregularly to create a visual rhythm) & Rhythm (refers to the way our eyes move through an image eg using sweeping text to move you around the image). Then we moved onto Emphasis which is the stressing of a particular area of focus. We can achieve this by using Simplicity, (omitting non-essential details of an image in order to emphasis what is important) Placement, (placing an object in the center of an image to create a focal point for that image) Colour, (placing a dark image in front of a bright image to create a focal point) & Isolation (if you group elements together in a image a object by itself will stand out as a focal point). That was the end of our lecture. Niamh then handed out different movie posters where we were put into groups of three (or in our case four) & asked what design principles we found in them. We got the poster from premonition which wasn’t a very effective poster to be honest. There wasn’t that much going on. We then split off into our groups& myself&the rest of the super cool group A headed to our Visual Language with Margret. Margret spoke more on our upcoming assignments & gave us some more ideas as to how to approach it. Margret then gave us the time to work on our assignment & was on hand to assist us in any way we need it. So all in all another great Visual Language lecture & lab. Next week i’ll be posting my finished work from my assignment so i hope you’ll enjoy that. Take care.

Visual Language week 8

Howdy again folks. Another great week in ITB. Unfortunaly  i wasn’t in on Friday for our Visual Language lecture or lab as my foot was really playing up on me so i had to stay at home with my foot up!! The guys&girls filled me in on whats happening though. We have another assignment which is entitled “Semiotics Collage”. Our task is to compose three celebrity portraits using the same picture of our chosen celeb supporting a myth or ideology associated with three of these different statements: “I am masculine” “I am feminine” “I am wealthy”” I am intelligent” “I am evil” “I am popular”. I’m really looking forward to doing this&the finish result will be posted up on this blog so hopefully you’ll enjoy it too. So i’m off to get cracking on that. Tune in next week for an update

Visual Language Week 7

Hi all. Well it was a bit of a strange week in ITB.  We had last week off for our mid-term then when we came back nearly all our labs&lecturs were canceled some due to illness but our Visual Language was canceled due to the fact that there is a graduation in ITB today & Niamh & Margret are involved with this. So again i haven’t much to report. I’m getting on a bit better on my crutches though i’m finding them very tiring but i’m getting there!! I did a couple more photoshop pic’s so i’ve put them up. Hope you like them. Again the young lad is my beautiful Son Shane. So that’s about it really. We will be back on track next week so drop by to see what we have been getting up to. Take care.

big-day

Visual Language Week 6

Hey everyone. So Week 6 was a bit of a disaster for me!! I broke my ankle, broke two bones in my right foot&tore the ligaments in my right foot also!!!! And it was such a bad time for it to happen as all the guys from Visual Language had a field trip to the IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern A rt) with Stephen our Digital Photography Lectuor coming along too. Because i’m on crutches & i had only got out of hospital the day before, so i wasn’t that good at getting around, i was told i wouldn’t have to go. But i was really disappointed as the feed back i got was excellent. All the guys&gals seemed to have a great time. In the Museum they were asked to make sketches of their favourite art work. Then outside Stephen gave everyone a few ideas of what type of photo’s he’d like them to take. And all this time i was layed up at home!!!!! So i haven’t much to report this week but i have put up pic’s of my plaster!!!! Luckly enough next week is a mid-term so i can get used to the crutches as i’m gonna be like this for about five weeks!!! So thanks for droping by&i hope you’ll come back for my next Visual Language post. Take care
